Heritage Preservation Services (HPS) is a professional consulting and research services firm specializing in historic preservation, architectural and cultural heritage conservation and documentation. HPS guides clients in better understanding the built environment. HPS brings nearly two decades of experience to protecting and preserving, identifying and evaluating heritage sites, properties, landscapes and neighborhoods. The focus of HPS’s work is in Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region. The firm also has extensive experience in Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia and the District of Columbia, and to a lessor extent in other parts of the United States and the European Union (Spain/UK). HPS is a certified woman-owned business entity.
Founded in 2000, by Kate Mahood, Architectural Historian (and former employee of the Maryland Historical Trust) the firm became a Limited Liability Company, Mahood LLC and registered the trade name of Heritage Preservation Services in 2006. Our work over the decades has included a broad range of accomplishments and many award winning preservation projects.
HPS understands natural and cultural landscapes, historical context, as well as specific architectural elements/motifs and physical conservation challenges. HPS understands the uniqueness of each site, project or property. The firm’s work has over the years has developed its own library of data and resources for understanding the broad ranges of historical, architectural and cultural resources that remain from the 18th century to the present. HPS is experienced in urban, small town, village, and rural environments and the full spectrum of buildings that includes, from residential, commercial, governmental institutional, agricultural, recreational, religious and public assembly spaces.
HPS also understands the interconnectedness of these building types as well as each aspect of each project, including the phases it travels to be realized. HPS is an experienced team partner in completing successful and enduring heritage preservation projects.
